Pastor Billy G. Miller & Sister Doretha Miller

Captives Free Christian Center was founded in October 1995 in the home of Pastor Billy G. and Doretha Miller. Our name is inspired by Luke 4:18, which speaks of proclaiming liberty to the captives and healing the broken-hearted. The church’s name was suggested by Brother Val Day, whom Pastor Miller met while serving in prison ministry. We chose “Christian Center” to ensure everyone feels welcome.

The founding members included Pastor Billy and Doretha Miller, Sister Billie Miller, Minister Val Day, Brother Marvin and Sister Torri Holliday, Sister Dottie Lewis, Brother Larry and Sister Katie Ford, Sister Irma Bell, Sister Faye Watts, and Sister Louise Mitchell.

In our first year, we met in various locations, including a storefront, a beauty salon, and Most High C.O.G.I.C. By November 1996, we purchased our current building at 1340 Lawry Avenue, followed by an additional property next door. Both buildings were paid off in less than six years.

Pastor Billy G. Miller, born on October 20, 1941, in Arcadia, Louisiana, and raised in Las Vegas, worked at TIMET Titanium Metals for 39 years before becoming the full-time pastor in 2005. His ministry began in 1986 at Victory Baptist Church, where he served in multiple roles, including prison ministry, hospital chaplaincy, and leadership positions.

Over the years, Captives Free Christian Center has grown significantly. Our church offers a variety of programs to support spiritual growth across all ages, including Sunday School, Teen Class, Vacation Bible School, and Wednesday Night Bible Study. Doretha Miller was dedicated to biblical teaching for children, committing herself to teaching generations of kids through Sunday School and Children’s Church—both of which continue today because of her faithful work. Pastor Miller actively participated in both district and national Christian education events, contributing to the broader ministry of teaching and discipleship.

Under the leadership of Billy G. Miller and Doretha Miller, Captives Free Christian Center has flourished both in membership and spiritual growth.
